Chainsaw FAQs

How do you sharpen a chainsaw?

The best way to sharpen a chainsaw chain is to use a round file that matches the size of the chain's teeth and file each tooth at the correct angle. Consider using a guide or having the chain professionally sharpened if you’re unsure of the process.

How do you measure a chainsaw bar?

Measure from the tip of the bar to the point where it enters the saw's housing with a tape measure. This is the cutting length and is used to determine the correct replacement bar size.

How tight should a chainsaw chain be?

The chain should be tight enough that it doesn't sag from the guide bar but loose enough to easily pull around the bar by hand. It should have a little slack but not so much that the drive links come out of the bar groove.

What size chainsaw is best for all-around use?

A chainsaw with a bar length between 16 and 18 inches is typically the most versatile. This should be suitable for most general cutting tasks like trimming, pruning, and cutting small to medium-sized trees.

Corded vs Cordless Chainsaws

Corded chainsaws offer a reliable source of continuous power which makes them suitable for extended cutting jobs where an electrical outlet is available. They tend to be lighter and require less maintenance, but mobility is restricted by the cord length. These are ideal for projects on the property outside the house or on a jobsite with easy access to power.

Cordless chainsaws provide more versatility and portability as they operate on rechargeable batteries. These are ideal for jobs in remote locations or areas without immediate access to power (like the woods). These may however, require additional batteries for prolonged use and typically have less power than corded chainsaws.

Gas vs Electric Chainsaws

Gas-powered chainsaws are known for their power and ability to handle challenging tasks like cutting large trees and heavy-duty logging. They have the advantage of being highly portable without the constraints of being restricted by cords or battery life. They do however, require regular maintenance and fuel management along with generating more noise and emissions. There are similar trade offs to a gas powered mower vs an electric battery powered mower.

Electric chainsaws are quieter, easier to start, and require less upkeep. This makes them well-suited for routine yard work, pruning, and normal cutting tasks. While they provide a cleaner and quieter experience, electric models may not deliver the same level of power needed for more intensive applications.

What our customers are saying...

Great chainsaw!

I have use my new Dewalt 60 volt chainsaw for 3 weeks and it has not skipped a beat! I am amazed at the power of the saw and the long life of the battery...I really like this saw. When I need it it's ready and waiting!

Nice addition to the tool belt

Small Portable Lightweight Chainsaw. Easy to use despite the manual. Made short work of the shrub roots I needed to cut down to ground level. More than enough power - though I am sure that a new/sharp blade gets most of the credit for that.

Dewalt 12 in brushless chainsaw

I am beyond pleased with this saw! I honestly had reservations about any battery powered chainsaw. It is light, easy to use, cuts like a much larger saw! The convenience alone is worth the price! Battery life is excellent! Easily cut more than 50 ten inch+ seasoned elm & pine on a single charge! Not sure how I managed without it!!
